OpenAI Expands Strategic AI Footprint Across India With Education, Payments, and Infrastructure Partnerships

OpenAI is accelerating its expansion in India through a coordinated push spanning higher education, enterprise payments, and large-scale AI infrastructure, positioning the country as a central hub for global AI adoption. The company has partnered with leading academic institutions including the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, and All India Institute of Medical Sciences New Delhi to deploy campus-wide AI tools, faculty training, and certification programs reaching more than 100,000 students and staff. The initiative is led locally by Raghav Gupta and targets integration of AI into research, analytics, coding, and academic workflows.

In the commercial sector, OpenAI has partnered with fintech firm Pine Labs, led by CEO B Amrish Rau, to embed AI-driven reasoning into payments infrastructure, automating settlement, reconciliation, and invoicing processes across business clients and merchants in India and international markets.

Separately, OpenAI has formed a major infrastructure alliance with the Tata Group, chaired by N Chandrasekaran, securing 100 megawatts of AI-ready data center capacity under the company’s Stargate initiative, with plans to scale to 1 gigawatt. The agreement includes deployment of ChatGPT Enterprise across Tata businesses and standardized AI-native development at Tata Consultancy Services.

India, now one of OpenAI’s largest user bases, is also set to host new company offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru, underscoring its growing importance as a global center for AI talent, enterprise adoption, and compute infrastructure.
