Reid Hoffman has expressed support for tracking AI usage through token consumption, as debate grows across the tech industry over how to measure effective adoption of artificial intelligence tools. His comments follow recent scrutiny of internal tracking practices at Meta, which had monitored employee AI usage before shutting down a related dashboard after leaks.
Tokens, the fundamental units processed by AI systems to interpret prompts and generate responses, are increasingly being used by companies as a proxy for engagement with AI tools. Hoffman indicated that while token usage is not a perfect measure of productivity, it provides useful visibility into how widely employees are experimenting with AI.
He said that organisations should encourage broad participation and iterative experimentation, noting that unsuccessful use cases remain part of the learning process. Hoffman also highlighted the importance of embedding AI across teams and sharing insights regularly to accelerate organisational learning and maximise impact.
