Oscars Ban AI-Generated Performances and Scripts From Award Eligibility

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has updated its rules to explicitly exclude AI-generated content from Oscar eligibility. Under the new regulations, only performances demonstrably carried out by credited human actors with their consent will qualify, and screenplays must be human-authored to be considered.

The Academy also reserved the right to request documentation of AI usage and human authorship from submitted films.

The rule changes arrive as AI-generated actors and synthetic performances gain visibility in Hollywood, including an in-production film featuring an AI version of Val Kilmer. The move aligns the Oscars with a broader industry trend: publishers and science fiction writers’ organizations have similarly moved to disqualify AI-generated work from awards consideration, reflecting growing institutional resistance to AI displacing human creative authorship.
