SpaceXAI Faces Twin Crises as Brain Drain Accelerates and Gas Turbine Pollution Lawsuit Looms

SpaceXAI, the company formed after SpaceX acquired xAI in February, is facing mounting pressure on two fronts: a significant exodus of AI research talent and a legal challenge over environmental violations at its Mississippi data center.

More than 50 researchers and engineers have departed since the merger, according to reports, including key leaders in coding, world models, and Grok voice development. Rivals Meta and Mira Murati’s Thinking Machines Lab have been among the primary beneficiaries, absorbing at least 18 former staff members between them. Of particular concern to those close to the company is the hollowing out of the pre-training team — the group responsible for building foundational AI models — following the departure of team lead Juntang Zhuang. Reports suggest that Elon Musk’s culture of extreme deadlines and corner-cutting contributed to the departures, though impending IPO liquidity may also have accelerated exits.

Separately, the NAACP, represented by the Southern Environmental Law Center, has filed for an emergency injunction against SpaceXAI over nearly 50 natural gas turbines operating without air pollution permits at its Mississippi facility. The turbines are classified as “mobile” under state rules because they sit on flatbed trailers, exempting them from regulation for one year — a loophole the lawsuit argues violates federal law. Only 15 of the 46 currently operating turbines hold permits, and residents in the surrounding area, already subject to elevated pollution levels, are said to be bearing the health consequences.
