Ouster and FieldAI Collaborate to Scale Autonomous Robot Perception Tech

Insider Brief

  • Ouster and FieldAI have partnered to combine FieldAI’s robotics foundation models with Ouster’s Rev8 lidar technology to improve how autonomous robots perceive and navigate complex industrial environments.
  • The companies said the collaboration is focused on enabling robots to operate in unstructured settings without pre-mapped routes, supporting infrastructure or significant modifications to the worksite.
  • FieldAI plans to integrate Ouster’s Rev8 lidar, which combines native color perception with three-dimensional sensing, as it expands deployments across industries including construction, mining, energy, manufacturing, security and government.

Ouster and FieldAI have announced a partnership to improve how autonomous robots perceive and navigate complex industrial environments by combining FieldAI’s robotics foundation models with Ouster’s new Rev8 lidar technology.

The collaboration will focus on deploying robots capable of operating in unstructured environments without pre-mapped routes, supporting infrastructure or significant modifications to the worksite, according to the companies. FieldAI’s software platform is designed to allow robots to adapt to new locations much like how a human worker learns a new job site..

“FieldAI is at the forefront of deploying general-purpose robots in unstructured settings where work is often dangerous and difficult for humans,” Ouster CFO Cyrille Jacquemetsaid in the announcement. “Their new class of foundation models offers the reliability and adaptability required for autonomous robotics deployment at scale.”

FieldAI already uses Ouster’s digital lidar sensors to support robots navigating in environments where GPS is unavailable or unreliable. The company said it plans to incorporate Ouster’s Rev8 lidar, which adds native color perception alongside three-dimensional sensing, as it expands deployments with industrial customers.

“Scaling autonomous systems in demanding real-world conditions starts with advanced sensor technology,” added Andrew Mullen, FieldAI’s head of hardware. “Ouster Rev8’s ruggedness, performance, and native color are helping FieldAI deliver next-generation physical AI solutions for industrial customers where it matters most, in the field.”

The companies said the enhanced sensing capabilities are intended to improve safety, situational awareness and interpretability for autonomous systems operating in sectors spanning construction and manufacturing to energy and mining, along with security and government.
