Spotify to Label AI-Generated Artists With “AI Persona” Tags, Exclude Them From Recommendations

Spotify announced it will begin labeling AI-generated artists with “AI Persona” badges starting in mid-September and will exclude such artists from its editorial and algorithmic recommendations. The badges will identify artists whose public identity is AI-generated rather than human, appearing on profile banners, About sections, Search results, and track rows.

Spotify said it will rely on both artist self-disclosure and its own review process, prioritizing profiles with significant audience reach. By default, AI Personas will not appear in personalized recommendations unless a user explicitly follows that artist. Artists will be able to appeal incorrect labeling.

The policy builds on Spotify’s existing AI framework, introduced in September 2025, which already labels AI-generated tracks and bans unauthorized AI voice clones. The company emphasized that the AI Persona label addresses artist identity, not how music itself was created, noting that separate tools like AI Credits and SongDNA already address music-making transparency.

Spotify said its programming prioritizes authentic artists building real careers, while acknowledging artists have creative freedom in how they present themselves. The company plans to introduce a reporting tool allowing users to flag unlabeled AI Persona profiles.

Self-disclosure through Spotify for Artists begins August 11, 2026, with labels rolling out publicly the following month. The move coincides with Spotify’s recent licensing deals with UMG and Merlin enabling AI-generated remixes and covers.
