AI Hedge Fund Situational Awareness Faces SEC Probe Following Major Losses

Situational Awareness, an AI-focused hedge fund led by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, is reportedly under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission following a sharp decline in its value. The fund, which had built its portfolio heavily around AI investments and experienced significant early growth, saw billions of dollars erased at the end of July amid a broader downturn in AI stocks.

The New York Times reported that the SEC has issued subpoenas to banks that conducted business with the hedge fund, focusing on institutions that oversaw its trading activity and provided funding support. Regulators reportedly instructed the banks to preserve related records, though the report noted that Situational Awareness has not been accused of any wrongdoing.

The company told the Times that scrutiny of prominent funds was expected and said it intended to cooperate fully with any regulatory inquiries. Situational Awareness had drawn significant attention on Wall Street for its close alignment with the AI industry’s rapid rise, and its recent struggles are being viewed by some as a cautionary example amid broader questions about the sustainability of AI-driven investment enthusiasm.
