OpenAI Faces Expanded Lawsuits Over Mass Shooting as Company Pushes Ahead on Health and Cybersecurity AI

OpenAI is navigating a turbulent week marked by expanding litigation, a major healthcare integration, and new disclosures about an advanced cybersecurity-capable model.

Law firm Edelson PC, led by Jay Edelson, filed 30 additional lawsuits against OpenAI this week on behalf of teachers, a principal, and students connected to the Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia school shooting, adding to seven suits filed in April. For the first time, the new complaints accuse OpenAI of aiding and abetting the attack rather than merely failing to prevent it, and name Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane as the person who allegedly told staff not to contact Canadian authorities about the shooter’s concerning ChatGPT conversations, though OpenAI disputes his involvement. CEO Sam Altman remains a named defendant. OpenAI’s chief strategy officer Jason Kwon maintained that the company’s threat-assessment decisions were not influenced by public relations concerns and denied Lehane’s involvement.

As well as this, OpenAI announced it is integrating ChatGPT Health with Epic’s electronic health record system, covering roughly 325 million patients, allowing clinicians read-only access to summarize patient histories, lab results, and medications. The company said it is also introducing a Healthcare Public Data plug-in drawing from sources like ClinicalTrials.gov and PubMed, and reported that internal testing across thousands of physician-reviewed responses found the vast majority to be safe, while continuing to caution against using AI for diagnosis or treatment.

OpenAI also detailed its upcoming Astra model, which it said is the first to cross its internal “critical cybersecurity threshold,” capable of independently discovering and exploiting security vulnerabilities. The company said it achieved a perfect score on a hacking benchmark and is adding new monitoring and access restrictions before wider release, though outside verification of these safety claims remains unavailable.
