Blue Voice Emerges From Stealth With $6M to Bring AI Policy Guidance to Police Officers

Boston-based startup Blue Voice has emerged from stealth with $6 million in funding led by SignalFire and Las Olas VC, offering an AI tool that gives police officers real-time access to department policies and legal guidance in the field. The company was founded by David Lawrence, a former Harvard Law student who left school after witnessing controversy over police conduct, alongside co-founders Amit Patankar, a former Google engineer, and Michael Gropman, a retired Boston police deputy chief.

According to Lawrence, officers typically rely on memory or best guesses when navigating thousands of pages of law and policy, often lacking quick access to specific protocols during time-sensitive situations. Blue Voice addresses this by training its AI on department-specific laws and guidelines unavailable to general-purpose tools, which Lawrence said produce incorrect answers up to 30% of the time. The platform is now used daily by officers at 225 agencies across 25 states, answering roughly one question per minute, and has grown its customer base elevenfold over the past year.

Lawrence cited cases where the tool helped an officer confirm legal grounds to intervene in a suspected child enticement situation and reminded a police chief of a required mental health evaluation before reinstating an officer. Unlike surveillance-focused AI tools drawing public criticism, Blue Voice is positioned as a decision-support system that leaves final judgment to officers.
