OpenAI Acquires Smartphone Camera Startup Glass Imaging for Over $300M

OpenAI has acquired Glass Imaging, a smartphone camera technology company, in a deal reportedly worth more than $300 million, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. Glass Imaging, based in Los Altos, California and founded in 2019, had previously raised approximately $30 million in funding.

The company was founded by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, former Apple engineers who previously led development of the iPhone’s Portrait Mode feature. At Glass Imaging, the pair applied AI to address the physical limitations of smartphone camera hardware, using neural networks trained on individual camera systems to improve image quality directly at the moment of capture, rather than through post-processing edits.

OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the acquisition. The company has been rumored to be developing its own hardware products, including a smartphone, earbuds, and AI companion devices. The Glass Imaging deal follows OpenAI’s earlier acquisition of io, a device startup founded by CEO Sam Altman and former Apple designer Jony Ive, which OpenAI purchased for $6.5 billion in 2025 as part of its broader push into consumer hardware.
