Rivian Licenses AI Voice Assistant Technology to Volkswagen Group Under $5.8B Joint Venture

Rivian is licensing elements of its AI voice assistant technology to Volkswagen Group, expanding the scope of the two companies’ $5.8 billion joint venture, according to Rivian’s third-quarter investor presentation released Thursday.

Rivian did not disclose licensing fees, payment terms, or which Volkswagen models will use the technology, though the assistant could debut in VW’s low-cost ID EVERY1 hatchback, slated to be the first VW vehicle built on Rivian’s software and electrical architecture. The company described the expansion as a proof point for the extensibility of its in-house platform.

The AI assistant, which lets drivers and passengers interact with the vehicle and control certain functions, took two years to develop. It rolled out to the R1S SUV and R1T pickup in May 2026 and to the new midsize R2 SUV in October.

Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe told TechCrunch at Disrupt 2026 that the company built its own agentic framework that understands what action a person wants when speaking to the vehicle and routes it to the right part of the car’s software. That capability could eventually allow Rivian vehicles to run AI agents from other companies, including Anthropic.

The joint venture, formed in 2024 and initially valued at up to $5 billion, centres on bringing Rivian’s software and electrical architecture to VW’s next generation of vehicles. Rivian said in its presentation that vertical integration across its hardware and software stack remains a core competitive differentiator.
