Meta Platforms Unveils Next-Gen In-House AI Accelerator Chip

Meta Platforms revealed on Wednesday their latest advancement in artificial intelligence (AI) technology with the introduction of a new AI accelerator chip, internally named “Artemis.” This development is aimed at boosting AI capabilities across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, while reducing dependence on NVIDIA’s chips and cutting energy costs.

“This chip’s architecture is fundamentally focused on providing the right balance of compute, memory bandwidth, and memory capacity for serving ranking and recommendation models,” the company wrote in a blog post.

The Meta Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA) chip, produced by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co using a 5nm process, promises triple the performance of its predecessor. Already operational in data centers, the MTIA is enhancing AI applications and supports generative AI workloads. This initiative is part of Meta’s broader strategy to invest in custom silicon technology and software development, highlighted by CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s plan to acquire a substantial number of Nvidia’s H100 chips, contributing to a total goal equivalent to 600,000 H100 chips this year.
