Novel AI System Transforms Whale Research in Monterey Bay

An exciting artificial intelligence (AI) program is revolutionizing how scientists track and study humpback whales off California’s central coast, turning casual whale-watching photographs into powerful conservation tools.

The innovative system, developed by scientist Ted Cheesman and hosted on the Happy Whale website, uses AI to instantly identify individual whales by their unique tail patterns, or flukes.

“Every humpback tale is distinct,” Cheesman explained, comparing the technology to facial recognition for whales.

The program has already identified over a thousand humpback whales, tracking their extensive migrations between feeding grounds in Monterey Bay and warmer waters as far south as Mexico. The AI system processes submitted photographs instantaneously, matching them against an extensive database of previously documented whales.

This technological breakthrough comes at a crucial time for humpback whales, which face mounting challenges from fishing line entanglements and climate change-induced shifts in their food supply. The waters off California’s central coast serve as a vital feeding ground, offering the whales abundant meals of anchovies in the cold, nutrient-rich waters.

For Cheesman, the project extends beyond scientific research into environmental awareness.

“You connect with one whale, it connects you with the whole ocean,” he noted. “To have that healthy ocean we have to treat it like it’s part of our home, a place we care about.”

The program encourages public participation, allowing anyone with a camera to contribute to whale research and conservation efforts. This citizen science approach has created an unprecedented network of whale observers, transforming our understanding of these magnificent marine mammals and their movement patterns across the Pacific.
