Google has introduced a unified Gemini agent that can not only answer questions but also complete tasks on users’ behalf from a single interface, announcing the move at a Google Cloud event on Thursday. CEO Sundar Pichai said Gemini now has over 1 billion monthly active users and that nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies use Gemini Enterprise. The agent will reach businesses first, which Pichai said will let Google address harder challenges around security, scale and performance before a consumer rollout.
Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said the agent can be given objectives rather than just instructions, allowing it to plan work, use custom skills and tools, and connect to internal systems such as Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Jira, BigQuery and Snowflake, as well as any MCP server. It selects the best model by default, though users can choose others, starting with Anthropic’s Claude models.
The agent has its own Workspace account and email address, understands team structures, calendars and approval chains, and records an audit trail attributed to itself. Users can monitor its reasoning, subagent delegation and progress through a tasks inbox. Early testers included On, Shopify and PayPal, and Google added new spending controls such as smart routing and real-time spend caps.
