Google Integrates Opal Vibe-Coding Tool Into Gemini to Enable Custom AI App Creation

Google has integrated its vibe-coding tool Opal directly into the Gemini web app, expanding Gemini’s capabilities to let users build custom AI-powered mini applications, known as Gems, without writing code. The update allows users to access Opal from the Gemini Gems manager, where natural-language prompts are converted into structured application workflows using multiple Gemini models.

Originally introduced in 2024, Gems are task-specific versions of Gemini designed for use cases such as learning, brainstorming, career guidance, coding support, and editing. With Opal now embedded, users can visually assemble and modify app logic through a step-based editor, rearranging and linking actions intuitively. More advanced customization is available via Opal’s standalone advanced editor, with created mini apps reusable across sessions. The move reflects Google’s broader push to simplify AI-driven app creation as vibe-coding adoption accelerates.
