OpenAI Launches macOS Codex App to Advance Agentic AI Software Development

OpenAI has released a new macOS application for Codex, marking a significant expansion of its agentic software development capabilities. The launch integrates parallel AI agents, background automations, and advanced workflow controls, bringing Codex closer to tools such as Claude Code as competition intensifies in AI-assisted programming.

The app is powered by GPT-5.2-Codex, OpenAI’s most advanced coding model to date, and is designed to make complex, multi-agent development more accessible through a flexible desktop interface. Chief executive Sam Altmansaid the goal is to pair frontier model performance with a more usable environment, enabling developers to build sophisticated software far faster than traditional workflows allow.
