Meta Explores AI Facial Recognition Feature for Smart Glasses

Meta is reportedly preparing to introduce facial recognition capabilities to its smart glasses, according to reporting by The New York Times. The proposed feature, internally known as “Name Tag,” would use the company’s AI assistant to identify individuals and provide contextual information to the wearer in real time.

The initiative reflects Meta’s continued investment in AI-powered wearable computing following the commercial success of its smart glasses products. Internal discussions about the feature have focused on balancing technical progress with privacy and safety considerations. Earlier plans to introduce facial recognition in the first generation of Ray-Ban smart glasses were abandoned due to technical and ethical concerns, but the company has revisited the concept as AI capabilities in computer vision and wearable devices advance.
