OpenAI announced it is removing limits on text-based chats for all ChatGPT users, a platform that recently surpassed 1 billion weekly users. The update introduces a new GPT-5.6 Luna model as the default for Free and Go tier users, replacing GPT-5.5, alongside a new “Think” button allowing users to select higher reasoning power for complex questions. Plus and Pro users will gain access to an upgraded GPT-5.6 Sol model designed for quicker tasks such as research, writing, and planning, along with a thinking slider to adjust reasoning depth. OpenAI said internal testing showed factual errors dropped 62% for GPT-5.6 Luna and 68% for GPT-5.6 Sol compared to GPT-5.5-Instant. The Sol update is available immediately to Plus and Pro users, with broader changes rolling out to Free and Go users this week, followed by unlimited chats and the Think button next week.
Separately, new details have emerged regarding OpenAI’s first hardware device, a screenless, donut-shaped AI speaker designed to be moved throughout a user’s home. According to a Bloomberg report, the device will feature high-quality metal construction, a premium design, and moving parts, with an expected price range of $300 to $400, notably higher than most comparable smart speakers currently on the market. The device is being developed in partnership with LoveFrom, the design studio founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive, with a potential release in 2027. The hardware push comes as OpenAI faces an ongoing lawsuit from Apple, which has accused the company of misappropriating trade secrets related to hardware development, allegations OpenAI has denied.
