Meta Releases Open-Weight “Muse Glimmer” Model to Power Local AI Agents on Consumer Devices

Meta released Muse Glimmer, an open-weight AI model designed to run agents locally on consumer hardware, offering a concrete look at CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s vision of “personal superintelligence.”

The 30-billion parameter model is an open counterpart to Meta’s more powerful closed model, Muse Spark, debuted in April. Glimmer is released under the Apache 2.0 license, allowing developers to download and modify it freely.

The model is built to support AI agents capable of multi-step tasks, including tool use, coding, file handling, and extended workflows, running on a single consumer GPU across text and images in over 100 languages. Meta said Glimmer processes personal data, such as scheduling and file management, locally rather than in the cloud, emphasizing privacy and “always-on” offline functionality.

In an accompanying letter, Zuckerberg reiterated his belief that distributing superintelligence widely would empower individuals and improve lives, while promising free or affordable access to such tools.

However, Meta continues to keep its most powerful model, Muse Spark, closed, while releasing the smaller Glimmer openly, suggesting the company is drawing a line between AI capabilities it shares broadly and those it retains greater control over.
