Caterpillar, the industrial equipment giant, is drawing on its long history in autonomous mining technology to broaden its use of AI across construction, manufacturing, and enterprise operations. CTO Jaime Mineart said the company is now extending lessons learned from automating mining trucks, drills, and loaders into more dynamic environments like jobsites and quarries.
Among its AI tools is the Cat AI Assistant, which allows field technicians to use voice commands to access repair procedures and identify needed parts, drawing on data from roughly 1.6 million connected machines and more than 16 petabytes of structured data. Caterpillar is also applying AI to generate digital twins for manufacturing analysis and to modernize legacy software, using AI agents to test code and identify defects earlier.
Mineart said building the technology is only part of the challenge, noting that integrating automation into existing jobsite workflows and operator roles remains difficult. As machines grow more autonomous, some operators may shift toward overseeing multiple machines remotely, prompting Caterpillar to commit $100 million over five years to retrain its 118,000 employees in AI, autonomy, and robotics.
The investment comes as Caterpillar benefits from rising AI infrastructure demand, with quarterly revenue reaching a record $20.5 billion, driven partly by a 72% jump in power-generation sales tied to data center growth. CEO Joe Creed said demand for cloud and AI infrastructure continues to accelerate.
