Surge Launches Robotics Business With Majority Stake in Idea8

Sri Lanka-based digital consultancy and technology firm Surge has launched Surge Robotics after acquiring a majority stake in product engineering company Idea8.

The new unit will combine Idea8’s work in internet-of-things systems, edge computing and sensor engineering with Surge’s AI, cloud and enterprise software capabilities, Surge indicated in a LinkedIn post.

Surge said the combined business is aimed at connecting factory operations with digital systems, with a focus on industrial automation, predictive maintenance and real-time factory intelligence.

Idea8 technology is already deployed with manufacturing companies including Uniqlo, MAS and Brandix, according to Surge. The company did not disclose financial terms of the acquisition or the size of the stake.

Surge also named technology executive Henry Wu and capital-markets veteran Sarath Sathkumara to its advisory board as it looks to take its smart-manufacturing business into international markets.
