  • The ETIAI project, led by Lars Carlsson, Head of the Department of Computing at JTH, focuses on developing safe, reliable, data-driven AI software for decision support, addressing challenges faced by many companies and this project is part of SPARK’s larger initiative, which also includes funding for an international visiting professorship and an adjunct from Husqvarna.

UNIVERSITY RESEARCH NEWS —  School of Engineering (JTH) at Jönköping University (JU)/December 19, 2023 — The Knowledge Foundation grants SEK 12.3 million to the AI project ETIAI within the research and education environment SPARK at the School of Engineering (JTH) at Jönköping University (JU).

“It is gratifying for us and our strategic development that we have had our operational plan approved for 2024,” says Kerstin Johansen, Associate Dean of research and program manager for SPARK.

“It is gratifying for us and our strategic development that we have had our operational plan approved for 2024,” says Kerstin Johansen, Associate Dean of research and program manager for SPARK.

“The positive development continues for the research and education that is developed together with business. At the same time as the university’s areas of strength in foundry processes, sustainable product development and human-centered industrial AI continue to develoFp, we also see strong international development, not least through the new position as a European university,” says Eva Schelin, CEO of the Knowledge Foundation.

Approves SPARK´s operational plan

In mid-December, it was announced that the Knowledge Foundation approves SPARK´s operational plan for 2024 and grants a total of SEK 13.5 million to three projects within the research and education environment. In addition to the synergy project ETIAI (Efficient and trustworthy AI), the Knowledge Foundation contributes SEK 610,000 to an international visiting professorship in molded products and SEK 546,000 to an adjunct from Husqvarna linked to electron microscopy.

“It is gratifying for us and our strategic development that we have had our operational plan approved for 2024, and that our efforts are judged to be in line with our strategic development for JTH,” says Kerstin Johansen, Associate Dean of research and program manager for SPARK.

“Major challenge for many companies”

“We are extremely happy that the Knowledge Foundation and SPARK has chosen to support our project. Among other things, we will study how to test and quickly develop safe and reliable software that implements AI methods. The implementation and testing of data-driven systems for decision support is a major challenge for many companies today,” says Lars Carlsson, Head of Department of Computing at JTH and project manager for ETIAI.

“The benefit of the project will be substantial for the manufacturing industry, but actually benefits all types of businesses, as exemplified by our strong corporate partners, GKN, Mölnlycke Healthcare and Husqvarna, continues Lars Carlsson.
