X to Pilot AI-Generated Community Notes in Fact-Checking Expansion

X, the social platform formerly known as Twitter, is launching a pilot program to test AI-generated Community Notes, expanding its crowdsourced fact-checking initiative. The new feature will allow large language models, including X’s own Grok and third-party tools integrated via API, to submit notes for public posts. These AI-generated contributions will undergo the same peer-review process as human-authored notes before publication.

Community Notes, a key part of Elon Musk’s platform strategy, provides context to misleading or ambiguous content by requiring cross-ideological consensus among human reviewers. While the introduction of AI raises concerns about misinformation and hallucinated context, X researchers emphasize that AI and human reviewers will operate collaboratively, with human oversight remaining essential to maintain accuracy and public trust.
