Target to Launch ChatGPT-Powered Shopping App as OpenAI Expands Its Retail Footprint

OpenAI is accelerating its move into retail with Target preparing to debut a new ChatGPT-powered shopping app in the coming weeks. The beta rollout will allow customers to ask for ideas, browse products, build multi-item baskets, shop for groceries, and check out directly within ChatGPT. The launch follows OpenAI’s recent addition of major retail applications such as Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify, and Zillow, as well as new commerce tools like Instant Checkout that enable in-chat purchasing for platforms including Shopify and Etsy.

The agreement also expands OpenAI’s enterprise partnership with Target. The retailer will adopt ChatGPT Enterpriseacross 18,000 headquarters employees, applying OpenAI’s models to supply-chain forecasting, in-store operational workflows, customer service tools, and AI-powered shopping and gifting assistants.
