Mozilla Releases Full AI Opt-Out Controls in Firefox as Browser Competition Intensifies

Mozilla announced that Firefox will soon allow users to block all current and future generative AI features, reinforcing the company’s position that AI in the browser should remain optional. Beginning with Firefox version 148, rolling out February 24, users will see a new AI controls section that enables either a complete opt-out or granular management of individual AI features, including translations, AI-powered tab grouping, link previews, PDF alt text, and the sidebar chatbot supporting services such as OpenAI and Anthropic.

The move follows the appointment of CEO Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, who has emphasized user choice and transparency as Mozilla expands AI capabilities. President Mark Surman has also signaled broader investment in responsible AI initiatives as Mozilla adapts to rising competition from AI-native browsers.
