Anthropic Updates Pricing Model for Claude Code, Restricts Third-Party Tool Usage

Anthropic has announced changes to how its AI coding assistant Claude Code is used with third-party tools, introducing a new pricing structure aimed at managing growing demand. The company confirmed that, effective April 4, subscribers can no longer apply standard usage limits to external tools such as OpenClaw, with additional usage now billed separately on a pay-as-you-go basis.

The update, overseen by Claude Code lead Boris Cherny, reflects a shift toward aligning pricing with usage patterns driven by external integrations. The policy will extend to all third-party harnesses over time.

The change follows broader competitive dynamics in the AI developer ecosystem, including the transition of OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger to OpenAI, as Anthropic continues positioning Claude Code as a core tool for enterprise and developer workflows.
