ArXiv Introduces One-Strike Ban for Researchers Who Submit Unchecked AI-Generated Content

ArXiv, the preprint repository widely used across computer science and mathematics, is tightening its rules on AI-generated research papers, introducing a one-year ban for authors who submit work containing clear evidence that AI outputs were not verified before submission.

Thomas Dietterich, chair of arXiv’s computer science section, announced that hallucinated references or visible prompts to and from large language models would constitute incontrovertible proof of negligence. Authors found in violation face a one-year ban, after which any subsequent submissions must first be accepted by a peer-reviewed venue. Section chairs must confirm the evidence before penalties are applied, and authors retain the right to appeal.

The policy does not prohibit AI use outright but places full responsibility on authors for all content regardless of how it was produced. The move comes as arXiv transitions to an independent nonprofit and as fabricated citations in AI-assisted research are rising across biomedical and scientific fields.
