Brain Corp and UC San Diego Partner to Develop Foundational Intelligence Layer for Physical AI

Insider Brief

  • Brain Corp is expanding its research collaboration with the University of California San Diego to develop technologies aimed at helping autonomous robots better understand and operate in complex real-world environments.
  • The project focuses on a “contextual grounding layer,” a digital representation of physical spaces designed to help robots better interpret surroundings, adapt to changing conditions and interact more naturally with people.
  • Brain Corp said its fleet of more than 50,000 deployed robots and over 25 million hours of autonomous operations provides real-world data to support research into physical AI and large-scale deployment.

Brain Corp is expanding its research collaboration with the University of California San Diego to develop technologies aimed at helping autonomous robots better understand and navigate complex real-world environments.

“Robotics has reached a point where the challenge is no longer simply movement or perception, but understanding,” Brain Corp CTO John Black said in the announcement. “The industry is entering a new era of AI-powered robotics, but deploying these systems safely and reliably in real-world environments requires a much deeper layer of contextual intelligence. This collaboration is focused on building that foundational understanding, creating the infrastructure that allows autonomous systems to operate consistently, adapt dynamically, and scale across complex commercial environments.”

Rather than building robots for a single job, the company is developing a platform to help coordinate robots, sensors and AI systems across large operations.

Brain Corp said the project centers on developing what it describes as a contextual grounding layer, described by the company as a digital representation of physical spaces that gives machines a more complete understanding of their operating environment. Stronger contextual awareness is critical for bringing advanced AI systems into real-world commercial environments, allowing robots to better adapt to changing conditions and interact more naturally with people, the company added.

Brain Corp now has more than than 50,000 autonomous robots deployed around the world and more than 25 million hours of autonomous operations. That scale, the company said, provides it access to real-world data on how robotic systems behave under changing conditions.

The research will be conducted with UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering and led in collaboration with Nikolay Atanasov, who heads the university’s Existential Robotics Laboratory and focuses on robotic perception and autonomous systems.

“Simultaneous Localization and Mapping, or SLAM, helped move robots beyond fixed industrial settings and into more dynamic environments,” Atanasov noted. “Today, the industry is exploring AI systems that operate directly from visual data, but we believe contextual 3D semantic maps remain essential for robust autonomy in complex physical spaces. Our collaboration with Brain Corp creates an exciting opportunity to demonstrate how richer spatial understanding can improve contextual awareness, resilience, and operational performance in real-world robotic deployments.”
