Cloudflare Launches Kitesurf, a Cloud-Hosted Browser Built for AI Agents

Cloudflare has launched Kitesurf, a cloud-hosted web browser designed specifically for AI agents rather than human users, entering a growing race among tech companies to build next-generation browsers. Unlike traditional browsers focused on visual elements such as tabs and themes, Kitesurf is built to manage context windows, token costs, performance, and scalability, addressing the different technical and security demands AI agents face, including vulnerabilities like prompt injection attacks.

The browser allows AI developers to build software capable of navigating websites, filling out forms, and completing other browser-based tasks without needing to develop their own browser infrastructure. Cloudflare said Kitesurf was built in just 12 weeks and runs entirely on the company’s serverless platform, Workers. It is currently available for free during its beta phase through Cloudflare’s Browser Run service, which allows developers to programmatically control headless browser instances on Cloudflare’s network.

According to Cloudflare, Kitesurf is significantly more efficient than Chromium in CPU and memory usage for common agentic tasks such as screenshots and HTML extraction, helping reduce computing costs. The browser was built using a modular rendering engine from Blitz, Firefox’s Stylo CSS parser, and the Boa JS Rust-based ECMAScript engine, with all components running inside Cloudflare Workers. The company said Kitesurf already passes more than 215,000 web platform tests and credited the open source Obscura project as inspiration for the browser’s initial development.
