Google’s Gemini Live Update Highlights Broader AI Industry Struggle With Overcomplicated Interfaces

Google announced new voice features for Gemini Live on Wednesday, promising users wouldn’t need to determine which specific feature, such as Spark or Daily Brief, a given task required. However, the company’s own branding structure undercuts that goal, with the Gemini app splitting functionality across multiple distinctly branded features, each with separate icons and navigation, rather than presenting a unified experience.

Daily Brief, an AI-generated agenda drawing on Gmail and Calendar data, has struggled to distinguish urgent information from unsolicited nudges, including surfacing users’ past Google searches in ways that can feel intrusive rather than helpful. Spark, an agent capable of taking action on users’ behalf, represents one of the app’s more genuinely useful capabilities, but its separate branding forces users to consciously choose between modes rather than simply stating their request.

The pattern extends across the AI industry, with Anthropic’s Claude requiring users to choose between chatting and using its Cowork feature, and OpenAI’s ChatGPT similarly split between Chat and Work modes. By contrast, Apple’s recent Siri overhaul embedded AI improvements into existing tools like Spotlight Search and the Camera app without requiring new interfaces. Text-based AI assistants such as Poke and Lindy have gained traction for similar reasons, with a16z investment partner Justine Moore noting that users generally prefer a simple, familiar messaging interface over learning new branded features.
