Caterpillar is working with FieldAI to develop physical AI, autonomous robotics and digital-twin systems for industrial jobsites and manufacturing facilities.
Citing labor shortages and pressure to increase productivity, Caterpillar said the collaboration is meant to use physical AI to turn real-time observations from industrial environments into information for faster decision making.
“The future of our industries will be shaped by how effectively we combine human expertise with AI-powered machines,” Caterpillar’s CTO Jaime Mineart said in the announcement. “Collaborations like this help accelerate the journey. We’re focused on applying AI where it matters most, helping customers improve safety, increase productivity and get more value from every operation.”
According to Caterpillar, the collaboration combines its industrial engineering capabilities and operational data with FieldAI’s AI-enabled robot foundation models for use in complex jobsites and factories. The companies are also using Nvidia accelerated computing and Nvidia Omniverse technologies to support digital twins built from operational data.
The company pointed out that the effort builds on Caterpillar’s work around what it calls the “jobsite of the future” that combines intelligent machines, connected workflows and digital information.
Early applications include:
- Autonomous inspections: Using robots to inspect industrial environments and provide additional operational visibility.
- Digital twins: Creating digital representations of jobsites and facilities that provide real-time information on equipment, infrastructure and operations.
- Situational awareness: Using data to identify potential risks and support faster decisions.
- Operational optimization: Applying simulation, automation and AI-based insights to industrial workflows.
Caterpillar said FieldAI’s technology is designed to operate across different robotic platforms and in dynamic industrial environments where conventional automation may be difficult to deploy. The company said FieldAI’s systems can also process operational and jobsite data to support its manufacturing modernization and autonomous-jobsite initiatives.
The collaboration extends Caterpillar’s use of AI across both customer jobsites and its own manufacturing operations. The company said digital-twin technology can give manufacturing teams greater visibility into facilities and help identify opportunities to improve safety and production flow.
