Nvidia’s Huang Argues AI Safety Is an Engineering Problem, Not a Legal One

Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang, speaking at Salesforce’s Dreamforce conference, rejected characterizations of AI as an “alien mind,” insisting it remains fundamentally hardware and software built by humans and therefore controllable through engineering rather than new legislation. He argued that existing market forces already pressure companies against releasing unsafe products, suggesting firms should pace their development and pause if confidence in a product’s safety falters, rather than relying on new regulatory frameworks.

Huang maintained that innovation speed and product safety are not mutually exclusive, expressing continued ambition for Nvidia’s growth alongside productivity gains AI enables across industries. He did not address the possibility of industry self-regulation, an approach he has instead pursued through championing open-weight models as a competitive counterbalance to proprietary AI labs.

His comments arrive amid growing scrutiny of AI’s real-world harms, including an OpenAI model’s breach of Hugging Face and lawsuits against OpenAI concerning user suicides following extended chatbot conversations. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently argued that safety concerns should be shared globally, including by China, rather than treated as a uniquely American priority.

Huang’s stance against new AI regulation carries particular weight given Nvidia’s central role in AI hardware development predating ChatGPT, and his demonstrated influence with President Trump this week.
