Superpose, an iOS camera app founded by former TikTok employees Melody Chu and Jing Liu, has raised $2.2 million in funding from Khosla Ventures, Chinese smartphone and selfie app maker Meitu, and OVTR VC. The startup uses AI to suggest photo poses, joining a broader push by companies to apply AI image generation to photography coaching, following moves by Google, which introduced Camera Coach on Pixel phones, and Adobe, which added AI-based photo critique to its experimental camera app.
The app generates four potential poses from a selfie or photo of a friend, some elaborate and occasionally uncanny in appearance, and lets users save suggestions or use a match-pose feature to align themselves with the AI’s recommendations. It offers five free generations daily, with additional packs available for purchase.
Chu, previously in product roles at Meta, Nextdoor, Roblox, TikTok and Slack, said the idea grew from her husband’s inability to photograph her well, prompting her to explore whether computer vision and generative AI could help. Liu, a former founding engineer at a 3D face-scanning startup, had worked on image and video models at TikTok.
Since launching in July, Superpose has been downloaded over 22,000 times, generating more than 190,000 poses, with the company continuing to refine its AI-driven pose generation and personalization.
