OpenAI Launches Independent Mathematics Advisory Group Following Backlash Over AI Math Claims

OpenAI has announced a new independent advisory group hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, called the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, aimed at giving mathematicians greater input into the company’s math-focused research efforts. The announcement follows the company’s disputed publication of a solution to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem, alongside claims that the same internal model resolved more than 100 additional open mathematical problems across multiple fields.

The rapid pace of these results has drawn criticism from the mathematics community, with 25 Fields Medal-winning mathematicians signing an open letter earlier this month arguing that AI labs pursuing high-profile mathematical breakthroughs threaten the integrity of academic mathematical work.

The new group will operate in a purely advisory capacity, assessing the significance of results and coordinating their public release, though members will not be paid and will retain independence to voice unsolicited opinions and control their own membership. Notably, the group will have no authority to influence the pace of OpenAI’s internal mathematical research. The Institute for Advanced Study emphasized in its own statement that it holds no decision-making power over any AI company’s choices, with responsibility remaining solely with OpenAI.

Nine mathematicians were named as founding members, though only one, IAS’s Camillo De Lellis, also signed the Fields Medalists’ critical open letter.
