Epson Robots has introduced the AX6, a new six-axis collaborative robot designed for applications where robots work more closely with people and where space or controlled environments are important.
According to the company, the AX6 uses power- and force-limiting features that can allow it to operate without traditional safety barriers when supported by an appropriate risk assessment. The launch expands Epson’s robot lineup to include industrial robots, collaborative robots and industrial collaborative systems aimed at different combinations of speed, worker interaction and redeployment.
“Collaborative robots have lowered the barriers to entry for many new robot users by simplifying programming and integration, while enabling new applications where space and user interaction are critical,” said Rick Brookshire, director of product development and robot development. “With the introduction of the AX6, Epson can now address these applications while offering customers a complete range of robotic safety solutions.”
AX6 Features
Epson said the AX6 is designed for users with varying levels of robotics experience and works with the company’s AX Portal software, which includes a no-code interface as well as Python-based development tools for more complex applications.
The compact, carbon-fiber robot carries IP54 and ISO 5 cleanroom ratings and its industrial kinematics can generate straight-line, curved and joint movements through either the no-code software or Python environment. Epson indicated the AX6 is meant for collaborative use where compact equipment and direct interaction with workers are important. Its cleanroom rating also makes it suitable for controlled production environments, the company added.
Other features include:
- Manual teaching controls: Three customizable buttons and two dedicated buttons on the end of the arm allow users to move the robot manually and record positions.
- Tool connections: An end-of-arm Ethernet port and pneumatic connections support grippers, dispensers and other tooling.
- Multiple power options: The AX6 supports 100 V to 240 V AC power as well as 48 V DC.
- Status indicator: A multicolor LED ring at the end of the arm provides visual information about robot status.
- Simulation: A 3D simulator allows developers to test programs before running them on the physical workcell.
- Python customization: Developers can upload their own libraries and modules when building more advanced applications.
