Panos Panay, Amazon’s SVP of Devices, Alexa & Leo, used an appearance at TechCrunch Disrupt to argue that personal AI is heading toward ambient computing rather than app-driven interaction. Speaking alongside the debut of Amazon’s new Bee AI wearables, Panay said today’s smartphones require users to remember and direct every task, whereas ambient devices use sensors and AI to work quietly in the background and determine what needs to be done.
He said this approach allows people to stay more present, get more done and spend more time with others without worrying about missing something.
The new Bee devices, a wearable band that converts into a pendant and a credit-card-sized phone attachment, passively capture conversations and surface to-dos, reminders and insights. Bee processes audio in real time without storing it and encrypts transcripts with keys controlled by the user’s device. Panay said designing with privacy in mind and giving customers control is critical for ambient products.
Panay, who spent 19 years at Microsoft overseeing Surface devices, said he expects a generation of users to stop asking for apps and instead expect AI to understand their needs. He added that he does not believe one form factor will replace another, but that a useful intelligence layer will connect them all.
