Meta has released Muse Spark Open, which it describes as the most capable open-weight AI model in the United States. The model features 816 billion parameters and a 1 million token context window, and Meta said evaluation results published on Thursday show it outperforming other popular open-weight models.
Natively multimodal, Muse Spark Open is designed for complex coding tasks and agentic work, and has been built to run locally on Apple computers. Running it locally is demanding, however, requiring at least 1 terabyte of RAM according to Engadget, with the model performing best on a Mac Studio equipped with the M5 Ultra chip.
Meta said it paired the model with Muse Code, its AI coding terminal, and deployed it across a range of agentic workflows, including bug fixes, new features and a full build for a Mastodon client. The company also used it to operate DaVinci Resolve, the high-end video editing software, where the model was able to review and crop footage.
Open-weight models can offer greater cost efficiency, transparency and flexibility than closed, proprietary alternatives. Muse Spark Open is available now through several API platforms.
