RailState, a North American company specializing in real-time rail capacity and performance measurement, announced that it has secured $4 million in funding to enhance its network and integrate AI-driven insights into the rail industry. The investment, led by a consortium of private equity and industrial executives experienced in information services, SaaS, and engineering, will facilitate the expansion of RailState’s network, particularly extending coverage to the US-Mexico border. It will also support product developments aimed at delivering precise, real-time information on rail networks.
“We’re grateful for this strategic support,” Heller said of the funding in the press release. “We’ve been moving quickly expanding our network and empowering rail users with critical AI insights to make better decisions. This funding helps us move even faster. We’re especially excited to be opening a new region of coverage at the US-Mexico border.”
Founded in 2021 by CEO Jamie Heller and Chief Commercial Officer John Schmitter, the Quincy, Massachusetts-based RailState has developed an insights platform that monitors train movements and rail network performance throughout Canada and parts of the U.S. The team, comprising rail industry experts, AI engineers, and veterans from logistics software backgrounds, serves major Canadian rail shippers like Teck Resources Ltd. and Canpotex, as well as governmental transport agencies including Transport Canada and the Canadian Transportation Agency.
“Cross border rail movements are rapidly growing in importance to the North American supply chain,” Schmitter told the publication FreightWaves. “There is increasing demand and service being added but there is no overall rail network visibility into what’s moving or how the rail network is performing to and from Mexico. Our aim is to change that and provide shippers with the insights needed to operate in a dynamic market.”
Schmitter also mentioned that RailState’s overarching aim is to encompass the entire North American rail network, including Mexico, with immediate initiatives to broaden and enhance the company’s network within the US.
Meanwhile, Mike Liik, president of the investor group, stated in the press release from RailState: “We could not be more confident in this team and the vision. We look for investment opportunities where the team has an unfair advantage. Jamie and John’s deep knowledge of the problem, long-standing relationships in the industry, and unique solution to a big, valuable problem is exactly that advantage.”
