Alibaba’s AI Revolution, Reshaping Global Trade for SMBs

Alibaba.com, the global B2B arm of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, is betting big on artificial intelligence (AI) to transform international trade. In a revealing interview, Alibaba.com President Kuo Zhang outlined the company’s vision for leveraging AI to empower small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) worldwide.

Zhang sees AI as a game-changer for global commerce, particularly in overcoming language and cultural barriers.

“We think that [AI] is a perfect scenario since the first the process is complexed and the people are using different languages in different time zones with different cultures as a background,” he explained.

The company’s commitment to AI is evident in its rapid adoption rates. Zhang revealed: “We first launch our AI tools for the sellers last October and now we have more than 20,000 of customers sellers side from China and 10,000 customers outside China who using this AI tools.”

Alibaba.com is now extending its AI capabilities to buyers, introducing a revolutionary search engine. Zhang described it as “not a kind of traditional passive search engine, it’s a kind of a conversational search engine.” This tool aims to guide users through the entire purchasing process, from initial concept to final quotation.

The potential of AI in streamlining global trade is immense, according to Zhang. He pointed out that while global trade is a “$20 trillion US dollar business,” digital penetration remains in single digits. “We believe there’s a lot of potential to grow if we lower the barrier and let more SMBs come to this network,” he stated.

Zhang outlined three key strategies driving Alibaba.com’s growth: leveraging AI technology, building a digital supply chain, and helping buyers cope with supply chain disruptions. He stressed the importance of diversifying the supplier base beyond China, noting: “We are introducing more and more global supplies into this network from Europe, Southeast Asia, North America, and Mexico, Latin America as well.”

This diversification strategy is crucial in light of potential geopolitical risks, such as proposed tariffs on Chinese imports. Zhang acknowledged these challenges but remained focused on the fundamental drivers of global trade: “The fundamental rule is demand and supply.”

As Alibaba.com continues to innovate and expand its AI capabilities, Zhang’s vision is clear: to make global trade more accessible and efficient for SMBs worldwide. By harnessing the power of AI and building a diverse, global network of suppliers and buyers, Alibaba.com is positioning itself at the forefront of the next revolution in international commerce.
