AI chip innovator Groq has opened its first European data center in Helsinki, Finland, marking a key milestone in its global growth strategy. The $2.8 billion startup — backed by investment arms of Samsung and Cisco — is expanding rapidly to meet increasing demand for AI inference services across Europe.
The Helsinki facility, developed in partnership with Equinix, positions Groq to capitalize on the region’s renewable energy infrastructure and ideal climate for data operations. Groq’s Language Processing Units (LPUs), designed specifically for inferencing rather than training, offer an alternative to Nvidia’s GPU-dominated market.
CEO Jonathan Ross emphasized the speed of deployment and robust North American supply chain as key differentiators. He stated Groq is already installing servers and expects to be operational within days, bringing low-latency AI compute closer to European users.
