GPT-5 Debuts from OpenAI as First Unified Model for Next-Generation ChatGPT Platform

OpenAI has released GPT-5, its first “unified” AI model that combines the reasoning capabilities of its o-series with the speed of the GPT series, marking a major shift toward building AI agents rather than simple chatbots. Now the default for all free ChatGPT users, GPT-5 can autonomously perform complex tasks such as generating software applications, managing calendars, and creating research briefs.

The model features a real-time router that automatically determines whether to respond instantly or take additional time to reason through a query. OpenAI says GPT-5 delivers improved accuracy, reduced hallucination rates, and stronger safety controls. It is also available via API in multiple sizes, with expanded usage limits for Plus, Pro, and enterprise customers.
