Google Pushes Forward on AI Glasses for 2026 as EU Opens Competition Inquiry Into AI Search Practices

Google is advancing its strategy in consumer AI hardware with plans to introduce its first AI-enabled smart glasses in 2026, developed in partnership with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. Built on Android XR, the devices are designed for everyday use and will come in two forms: a screen-free version for hands-free interaction with Google’s Gemini assistant, and a display-enabled model offering navigation cues and real-time information visible only to the wearer. Google also previewed Project Aura with Xreal, expanding productivity and entertainment capabilities through extended displays. With up to $150 million committed to eyewear partnerships, the initiative positions Google to compete more directly with Meta, Apple, and Snap in the rapidly emerging AI wearables market.

Alongside this hardware expansion, Google faces growing regulatory scrutiny in Europe. The European Commissionhas opened an investigation into whether Google is using publisher content without fair compensation to power AI Overviews and other AI-generated answers that appear above search results. The probe will assess whether Google’s dominance in search harms competition and limits rival access to YouTube data. The inquiry comes amid a wave of legal challenges over AI content usage as regulators and publishers seek clearer economic protections in the shift toward AI-driven discovery.

The move positions Google to compete more directly with Meta, Apple, and Snap in the emerging AI eyewear category. Google’s partnership structure includes up to $150 million committed to Warby Parker for product development, as the company prepares to bring AI-enabled glasses into mainstream retail next year.
