Meta has acquired Moltbook, a social network designed for artificial intelligence agents, in a move that appears focused on strengthening its AI development efforts. The company confirmed that the Moltbook team will join Meta Superintelligence Labs, where their work will explore new ways for AI agents to interact with people and businesses.
Industry observers suggest the acquisition functions primarily as an acqui-hire, bringing in developers experimenting with AI agent ecosystems rather than targeting Moltbook’s bot-focused social network itself. The move aligns with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s previously outlined vision of an “agentic web,” where businesses and consumers operate through autonomous AI assistants.
In such a system, AI agents could manage tasks such as advertising, bookings, shopping, and customer support. Analysts note that Meta could extend its advertising model into this environment by enabling AI agents representing businesses to interact directly with consumer agents, potentially creating a new layer of automated digital commerce and marketing.
