OpenAI has entered into an agreement with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to distribute its artificial intelligence products across U.S. government agencies for both classified and unclassified use, according to confirmation provided to TechCrunch. The move follows OpenAI’s recent agreement with the Pentagon, enabling deployment of its AI models within classified military networks.
The partnership positions OpenAI within AWS’s established public-sector infrastructure, including Amazon Bedrock and secure environments such as AWS GovCloud and classified regions handling sensitive workloads. AWS will act as a distribution channel across federal customers, significantly expanding OpenAI’s reach within government.
An OpenAI spokesperson indicated the company will retain control over model availability and deployment conditions, including safeguards and approvals for sensitive use cases. The development comes amid tensions between Anthropic and the Department of Defense, further intensifying competition in government AI infrastructure.
