Google Expands AI in Photos with Video Remix Feature as SynthID Watermark Debunks Viral Deepfake

Google announced a new “Video Remix” feature for Google Photos, powered by its Gemini Omni model, allowing users to edit and transform videos in seconds through tools such as cinematic relighting, background swaps and artistic style effects. The feature, accessible through the app’s “Create” tab, is part of Google’s broader push to integrate generative AI into consumer products as it competes with Apple, OpenAI and Adobe. Video Remix begins rolling out to eligible Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers across the U.S. and more than a dozen other countries, following recent additions such as AI-powered touch-up tools and a virtual outfit feature within Google Photos.

Separately, Google’s SynthID watermarking system was credited with debunking a widely circulated AI-generated image falsely depicting Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell in a hospital bed. Fact-checking site Snopes confirmed the image carried the SynthID watermark, which flags content generated by participating AI models. The incident, which followed weeks of speculation about McConnell’s health, demonstrated the watermark’s ability to persist even after an image is shared and recaptured across platforms. SynthID has been embedded in Gemini-generated images since 2025, with OpenAI joining the program in May 2026; Anthropic does not participate.
