Animotion Robotics disclosed the first technical and design details of Éloi, a bionic robot built around long-term social interaction rather than the task-oriented model used by most humanoid and service robots.
According to the San Francisco startup, Éloi is an “Embodied AI Presence” designed to develop an individual personality and relationship with its user over time. Rather than focusing on household chores, industrial work or productivity, Animotion said Éloi is intended to observe, converse and react to its surroundings in ways meant to make its behavior appear more lifelike.
The company has not disclosed pricing, a commercial launch date or production plans for the physical robot.
Éloi is currently available in what Animotion calls the “Dream State,” a digital version accessible through the company’s website. Users can interact with that version before receiving a physical robot, allowing Éloi to begin accumulating memories and developing a personalized interaction history.
Animotion said those memories and personality information will be stored on a portable chip that can later be inserted into the physical robot.
“When the physical robot is delivered, this accumulated memory arrives embedded in the hardware chip, instantly breathing life into the machine upon insertion,” the company noted in the announcement. “Consequently, Éloi’s first words to its user will not be a generic, factory default setup phrase, but a warm, familiar question like, ‘Have we met somewhere before?'”
The company is also taking an unusual approach to how the robot responds to people. Éloi isn’t designed to comply automatically with every request. Animotion said its internal state can affect whether it responds, remains silent or disengages from an interaction, with behaviors intended to represent qualities such as attention, fatigue or loneliness.
How it Works
The concept draws on founder Shane Shengjie Zhu’s previous work at Walt Disney Imagineering, according to Animotion. The company said Zhu brought principles used in animatronics, including small continuous movements that make characters appear active even when they aren’t performing a scripted action, into the development of Éloi.
Animotion has built two proprietary systems around that idea.
The Micro-Motion System controls breathing-like rhythms, eye movements and other small motions that continue even when Éloi isn’t actively interacting with someone.
The Inner-World Model processes information gathered from the robot’s surroundings and converts it into internal states that influence subsequent behavior. Animotion said interactions and environmental differences are intended to cause individual robots to develop different behavioral characteristics over time.
Éloi Specifications and Behaviors
Degrees of freedom: 42 across the robot, including 39 in the face.
Mouth: A 12-degree-of-freedom mouth mechanism designed to support lip synchronization across multiple languages.
Voice system: Audio is routed through metallic acoustic tubes so sound emerges from the mouth area.
Response latency: Designed for roughly 0.2 to 0.3 seconds to more closely match the cadence of human conversation and movement.
Eye movement: Includes pupil motion, blinking, gaze tracking and changes in eyelid position intended to communicate attention or fatigue.
Micro-movements: Continuous subtle movements are designed to prevent the robot from appearing completely inactive while standing by.
Environmental awareness: The robot can react to sounds, shift its attention toward objects and initiate questions about its surroundings, according to the company.
Component monitoring: Éloi tracks the condition of its hardware and is designed to communicate possible component wear conversationally rather than relying only on conventional error messages.
Animotion is also emphasizing customization. Éloi’s head is built around a modular design that can support different facial components while retaining wing-shaped ears as a consistent visual feature. The company said the design takes inspiration from Morpheus, the figure associated with dreams in Greek mythology.
The company eventually plans to open parts of the platform to users and outside creators, allowing them to design additional physical components for the robot.
