Brad Lightcap, one of OpenAI’s longest-serving executives, announced he is leaving the company to pursue a new venture. Lightcap, who joined OpenAI in 2018, served as chief financial officer for four years before becoming chief operating officer in 2022, a role he held until transitioning earlier this year to lead special projects. Before OpenAI, he worked alongside CEO Sam Altman at Y Combinator.
In an internal message shared publicly, Lightcap reflected on helping build the company’s early operations, finance, legal, and partnerships teams, calling it a privilege to watch those teams grow under strong leadership. He offered few details about his next venture but said he had spent recent months focused on identifying critical challenges the world would need to address going forward, expressing continued confidence in OpenAI’s mission.
Lightcap’s departure adds to a series of executive exits at OpenAI as the company prepares for a highly anticipated IPO. In July, Fidji Simo, the company’s number-two executive overseeing AGI development, announced her departure. Other recent departures include Bill Peebles, former head of the discontinued video generator Sora, and Kevin Weil, former vice president of the company’s Science division.
In addition to this announcement, OpenAI has launched a dedicated ChatGPT desktop application for Linux this week, following requests from open-source developers. The preview release extends ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex to Linux users, supporting Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44, with compatibility expected across related downstream distributions. The launch completes ChatGPT’s availability across all major desktop operating systems. OpenAI’s Linux rollout follows Anthropic, which released a Claude desktop app for Linux approximately a month earlier, supporting Ubuntu 22.04 and Debian 12 or later.
