Cursor Launches Origin Code-Hosting Platform As GitHub Outages Fuel AI Coding Competition

Cursor, now part of SpaceX following the completion of its acquisition, launched Origin this week, a new code-hosting platform enabling developers to collaboratively work on codebases, browse and edit them, manage pull requests, and store repositories, functions traditionally associated with GitHub. The launch marks a natural extension for Cursor, whose business until now centered on automated web development services through its AI code editor. The company said “agent native” features would arrive on Origin soon, alongside a broader app ecosystem to support coding efforts on the platform.

Origin was designed for interoperability rather than replacement, allowing developers to connect their GitHub repositories to Cursor and sync them without abandoning GitHub entirely. The launch coincided with a lengthy worldwide GitHub outage that degraded site functions for over six hours with an error rate approaching 20 percent, part of a pattern the platform has faced this year. An analysis by LeadDev reported that GitHub suffered 257 outages over the past year, with reporter Charles Humble describing a visible exodus of high-profile users.

Despite the opening, GitHub remains dominant, with roughly 180 million developers using the platform as of last October since its founding in 2007 and acquisition by Microsoft in 2012.
