Suno Launches New AI Music Model Trained on Licensed Data Amid Ongoing Legal Disputes

Suno unveiled a new AI music model family, Suno v6, on Wednesday, developed using licensed data from music labels and distributors including Warner Music Group, BMG, and Believe. The company said the new models were not trained on the data used for its earlier versions, following lawsuits from record labels alleging copyright infringement. Suno previously settled with Warner Music Group and reached a licensing agreement with BMG.

The release includes three versions: a base Suno v6 model for controlled, reliable outputs; an experimental Suno v6-wild model for creative exploration; and a faster Suno v6-mini available to all users, with older models set to be retired. The new lineup allows users to edit portions of songs via prompts, use text, images, or video as creative references, and isolate instruments to build new tracks.

Suno chief product officer Jack Brody said the company plans to introduce a remix feature allowing AI-generated derivative works, contingent on artist opt-in through a new program developed with music labels, describing it as an opportunity to create additional revenue streams for rights holders and artists. Suno also recently introduced watermarking for generated songs and tiered download limits, which Brody said could help address issues like streaming fraud.

The announcement follows Suno’s admission that it used YouTube videos to train earlier models, and the company continues to face lawsuits from Sony, Universal Music Group, and artists including Jason Isbell. Suno has raised over $819 million in funding to date.
