Obama Urges Democrats to Prioritize AI Policy as Safety Debate Intensifies

Former President Barack Obama said Democrats need to make artificial intelligence a central policy focus, calling for a clear plan to address the technology’s economic and safety risks. Speaking recently at a Democratic fundraising event interviewed by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Obama said that once Democrats regain the House majority, they should establish a framework for public discussion around AI, warning that the technology’s rapid development in private hands could be dangerous without proper oversight, while also noting its potential benefits, such as accelerating drug development. Jeffries said decisive action on AI is necessary and criticized Republicans for failing to govern on the issue.

Obama has reportedly spoken privately with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, positioning himself as an informal sounding board for AI executives. His remarks follow heightened concern over AI safety, including a recent resignation from Anthropic over fears the industry is racing toward uncontrolled superintelligence, and Amodei’s proposal for independent safety evaluators and shared industry standards, which Altman and Elon Musk both responded to favorably.

President Donald Trump, speaking separately at a golf event in Ireland, downplayed safety concerns, emphasizing the importance of U.S. leadership in AI while suggesting that guardrails could still be implemented.
